Wednesday 20th April 1977

Dear Tom and Audrey,

It was very nice receiving your nice long letter beginning of April, ‘Thank you’, I will remember if we are past at anytime.  But the nurses that come are very good. Also some of the neighbours.

We did manage to get a good gardener but he is ill just now in bed with bronchitis so hope he will soon be better. He can only do 4 hours a week is 72 but gets on with it when he is here which some of the young ones don’t do. Ethel (the housekeeper) can manage the inside and does not want anyone to help.

No you didn’t tell me about uncle “Arthur Daft”. I didn’t know him but your mother used to talk to me about him. “Like you” I hadn’t heard anything about Lily’s family since Edna died, which is 22 years next 3rd May.  (3 May 1955). She use to the son wife and baby to see mother at, “Wynstay” they lived then at West Bridgeford. I think it was your Man and Dad that didn’t mix with the family for we use to have some very good times their and they use to come down to Skegness a lot. At that time, Uncle Fred did a lot of building and repairs for Nottingham Council so of course, mixed with the elite of the City and mother loved going out with them. She came over often in the winter.

Yes? It did brake the family up when Fred, Grandpa Hewitt married Nancy’s friend Emma But Nancy and Edna came down to Skegness regular after that. They would just walk in. If we was full up they would manage in the staff bedroom.

Mother and I came over when Dad died in 1932 that was just when your grandpa had got in with Emma. Can you remember, we stayed the weekend with you at “Toston Drive”. After that we didn’t come to Nottingham a lot.

Did you know that grandma Hewitt died at “York House”, July 16th 1930. Sonny died Feb 12th 1930 that really broke their home up. That’s why we fetched aunty in early June to stay with us. She was very ill at the time and of course she blamed Grandpa Hewitt a lot for Sonnys death. He was a lovely boy. Good looking too.

We do get “Roger”, that’s Ednas son and family up to see us occasionally. He has 2 boys. He lives in Picadilly against Bulwell forest. That is all the family, cannot tell you any more about them.

You don’t see much of your family but its nice to hear they are getting on well. Give them our best wishes when you next see them .

To add to my other complaints, the doctor came up a week ago today. I had got “sugar diabetes” . Will let you know what else I get “Ah, ah”.

Look after yourselves, excuse writing love and best wishes from us both.

Ethel.
